The challenge was sourcing an extract pure enough to dissolve in a carbonated drink without cloudiness, off-flavors, or residual solvents, while preserving the natural cannabinoid and terpene profile of the plant.

The challenge: beverage-grade purity

Hemp extract destined for a beverage has to clear a higher bar than extract bound for a tincture or capsule. Carbonated water exposes every flaw. Residual plant waxes cause haze. Leftover solvents from ethanol or hydrocarbon extraction carry bitter, chemical notes that no amount of flavoring can mask. And aggressive post-processing strips out the minor cannabinoids and terpenes that make full-spectrum extract worth using in the first place.

Just Chill needed an extraction partner that could deliver a winterized, full-spectrum oil clean enough for a sparkling tonic, at a consistent potency, without destroying what makes the hemp plant's profile valuable.

The process: CO2 extraction + winterization

We start with supercritical CO2 extraction, which pulls cannabinoids and terpenes from the hemp biomass using only pressurized carbon dioxide. No butane, no propane, no ethanol. CO2 evaporates completely from the finished extract, leaving zero chemical residues. The FDA classifies CO2 as Generally Recognized As Safe for food and beverage processing.

The raw extract then goes through our winterization process, which removes the plant waxes, lipids, and chlorophyll that would otherwise cloud a clear beverage. The crude oil is dissolved in food-grade ethanol and held at sub-zero temperatures for 24 to 48 hours. During that time, the fats and waxes precipitate out and are filtered away. What remains is a stable, clear, golden oil with the full cannabinoid and terpene profile intact.

Decarboxylation, the controlled heating step that converts raw CBDA and THCA into their active forms (CBD and THC), happens at precise temperatures calibrated to preserve the terpene fraction. Terpenes are volatile, and aggressive heat destroys them. Our process uses lower temperatures over a longer cycle to keep the aromatic compounds that give each hemp cultivar its distinctive character.

The finished extract dissolves cleanly into Just Chill's carbonated tonic base. No haze, no sediment, no chemical aftertaste. Each can delivers a precise 4mg THC and 4mg CBD from full-spectrum hemp, with the terpene profile preserved from the original plant material.

Just Chill currently produces two flavors: Lemon Ginger and Rainier Cherry. Both are sold in Washington state and are compliant with federal hemp regulations at under 0.3% THC by dry weight. The extract is the same in both: a full-spectrum, winterized, CO2-extracted hemp oil produced in our facility.
